Cruising Paradise

Sam Shepard

I love short stories. There’s no flannel. They’re finely honed, precise works of art: Examples of sheer craftsmanship with no room for indulgence. They’re often dismissed and not taken as seriously as full-blown fiction, but that’s unfair.

This startlingly strong collection is by the actor, director, playwright, and screenwriter Sam Shepard. His voice is distinctive, its tone tough, unrepentant, but also reflective and hugely empathetic. This is outsider art at its very best. I’ve just finished reading it for the second time after a gap of 18 years. A lot has happened in that time, and he’s inspired me to write all about it, warts and all.
