A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens

Better even than the Muppet version, Dickens’ original novel weighs in at around 100 pages, so is a great entry-point for anyone put off by the heft of his average tome. And the opening sentence, “Marley was dead: to begin with” is the perfect example of both a powerful short sentence and the art of starting a story at break-neck speed. Have a look at Quietroom’s respectful parody while you’re at it.
